Editorial standards

How the newsroom reports, sources and corrects.

Every Daily Readout story is held to the same rules. These are them.

Primary sources first

We report from the study, the dataset, the regulator's notice or the court record. When a story rests on research, we link the research itself, and we name the journal or meeting where it appeared.

Research presented at a conference has not yet been through full peer review. When a story is based on a conference abstract, we say so.

Size and kind of study

We tell you how many people a study followed, who they were and what kind of study it was. An observational study can show a link. It cannot prove cause, and we will say which one you are reading about.

Independence

Advertisers and partners do not see or approve stories before they run. Sponsored content is labelled at the top of the page, carries an advertiser disclosure and never appears on our front page or section pages.

Corrections

If we get something wrong, we fix it and add a dated note at the end of the story saying what changed. To report an error, write to corrections@thedailyreadout.com.

Not medical advice

The Daily Readout reports news for general information. It is not medical advice. Talk to a doctor before you start, stop or change anything you take.
